New Delhi: Beer Evam Whiskey Drinkers Association (BEWDA) has warned Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, that none of their members will ever vote for BJP again if Nitin Gadkari doesn’t stop constructing highways in the country. BEWDAs have issued this warning after the Supreme Court order placing a ban on selling alcohol around the highways.

After the SC order, one can’t sell alcohol within 500 meters of any national highway. The decision has led to closure of hundreds of wine shops along the national highways. In addition to that, several bars and pubs in major cities are facing closure because of the presence of national highways nearby. After these reports, BEWDAs have decided that they must stop the growth of national highways before it leads to total prohibition across the country.

Speaking to the media, President of BEWDA, Mr Monk said ,”This is a direct attack on the freedom to get drunk and we can’t just stand and watch. Now Supreme Court is beyond our reach and we can’t ask them to overturn their decision but we can always pressurize public representative Nitin Gadkari. If he stops constructing new highways, and his government renames highways as roads under Pradhan mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, we can have all our alcohol shops open again. If he doesn’t do it, every BEWDA will take a pledge that we will never vote for BJP again.”

When we asked how can the government change highways to village roads, Mr Monk said ,”India is a land of villages, all the highways are built by acquiring land from villages. When the land has been taken from villages, they automatically become Gram Sadak, simple logic.”

We tried contacting Nitin Gadkari but he couldn’t be reached for a comment. Unconfirmed reports say that he is sitting in front of a road-roller to stop the construction of a highway in a neighboring state.
